Newlands students win inter-provincial athletics champs

The Wellington Grade 12/13 athletics team convincingly won the Interprovincials at Aorangi Stadium in Timaru this Easter.  A team of 44 athletes represented the province with 11 boys and 11 girls selected in each of the 12 and 13 year old grades.

Wellington won the Graham Vivian Interprovincial Shield for the first time last year by just 70 points to Auckland.  This year it was Canterbury who finished second but the margin was much greater with Wellington winning by 4000 points.  It was only the second time in the shield’s 34-year history that Wellington has won.

In this victory two Y9 Newlands students finished in the top three for overall points in this grade.  Islam Khaled-Abbas finished first overall and Ben Murdoch third.  They both finished with 3000 points or more, which is very hard for this age group to achieve.  The 12 boys’ team’s score of 29,600 points is just short of the best ever 12 year olds boys score since the competition began back in 1979.  As a group they scored 3000 points more than their closest rival.

Their results can be seen below:

Islam Khaled-Abbas 1st overall (3,374 points)
1st Long Jump 5.54m (PB)
1st 400m 56.61s (PB)
