Last week 26 students attended the Western Zone Athletics Championship. This year students had been offered a number of training sessions as well as an athletics afternoon in preparation for the event. There were a number of successes at the event which has seen 10 students progressing to the regional athletics day this Wednesday.
On the track Victoria Green (Y9) came 3rd in the 100m and then won the 200m. Kushla Smith (Y10) came 2nd in the 300m and then won the Junior 800m. Sophie Atkinson finished 2nd to Kushla in the 800m before winning the 1500m.
From a boys perspective on the track Jarred Hodson (Y10) came 3rd in the intermediate boys 400m whilst Siale Vea (Y9) came 2nd in the 80m hurdles.
In the field events Siale came 2nd in the Junior boys Discus as well as 4th in the triple jump behind Kauri Wharehinga (Y9) who finished 3rd. Our boys dominated the intermediate and senior high jump with Ben Murdoch (Y11) coming first equal in the intermediate grade and Zyrus Grace (Y13) winning the senior high jump which was his first competitive high jumping event. Ben also claimed the intermediate boys long jump as well. Miya Pene-Johnson won the girls junior triple jump which was also her first attempt at triple jump. Lateefah Idris (Y11) rounded out the girls throwing events by winning the intermediate girls Javelin and coming 2nd in the Discus.
