Celebration of Sport

This years Celebration of Sport takes place on Thursday 21 October in our school hall.

At this event we will recognise the achievements of our sporting students.

The information below outlines our current policy on Sports Awards and the decision making criteria for our major awards

CURRENT SPORTS AWARDS POLICY

The College will recognise the achievements of students who represent the school as well as those who play sports not provided by the school.

If students choose not to represent the school in sports provided by the school and there is no agreement for them to do so (i.e. playing for a sports club or sports academy) then they will not be eligible to win the following applicable awards:

Deb Mills Trophy – Sportsperson of the Year – Female

Morris Barling Trophy – Sportsperson of the Year – Male

Hornal Trophy – Student achieving the highest level in sport (for the code they are not playing at the school)

CELEBRATION OF SPORT – AWARDS PROCESS

NOMINATION PERIOD – Term 3 holidays of previous year to end of Term 3 in current year

  1. Nominations sought by Code Convenors from coaches/managers  
  2. Students complete survey on their out of school sporting activities and achievements
  3. Code Convenors make decisions on Code trophies 
  4. All out of school achievements are verified by Sports Department by checking Regional/National sports associations websites or making direct contact
  5. All information is collated and presented to the Newlands College Sports Committee (Deputy Principal in charge of Sport, Director of Sport and Active Recreation and department members, Head of Health and Physical Education).
  6. The Sports Committee makes decisions on the major awards based on the information received. If required, information will be sourced via College Sport Wellington and National Sports Organisations.

CELEBRATION OF SPORT – AWARDS CRITERIA

The information below outlines how criteria for the sports awards

MERIT AWARDS (Nominated by coaches and presented at Year Level assemblies)

To be given to individuals for their service to a particular sport(s) based on THREE or more of the following.

  • Attitude
  • Application
  • Effort
  • Dedication

That trait having been consistent throughout the season.

DISTINCTION AWARDS (Sourced from Code Convenors and students via annual survey, and presented at Celebration of Sport)

  • For individuals achieving representative status: Regional, Provincial or National.
  • For teams or individuals who win a Collegiate, Regional, or National event or title.
  • For teams or individuals who reach a final of Collegiate, Regional or National competition.
  • For individuals in tournaments who are named as MVP or selected in tournament team

PLEASE NOTE

Individuals will not receive school based recognition for:

  • Club based activities 
  • Private Academy based activities

MAJOR AWARD CRITERIA

STUDENT COACH OF THE YEAR: Awarded to the student coach who has demonstrated excellent leadership and has been particularly effective in developing both individuals and the team.

DECISION MAKING CRITERIA:

  1. Performance of the team
  2. Feedback from Code Convenors/Managers

TEAM OF THE YEAR: For the team reaching the highest levels in sport

DECISION MAKING CRITERIA: 

  1. What the team has won or achieved (National Title vs Regional league)
  2. The level of competition
  3. The number of teams involved in the code and/or competition
  4. Historical performance of college (i.e. qualifying for nationals for first time)

AWD TROPHY: Athlete with a Disability – Sportsperson of the Year. 

DECISION MAKING CRITERIA

  1. The students achievement in sport played for the college, and the level in which they are playing
  2. The students achievement in representative sport not offered at the college
  3. Has the student received any distinction certificates or trophies for a code/s they are involved in

P.E. DEPARTMENT TROPHY: Junior Sports Person of the Year. For outstanding achievement in sport at the junior level.

DECISION MAKING CRITERIA

  1. The students achievement in sport played for the college, and the level in which they are playing
  2. The students achievement in representative sport not offered at the college
  3. Has the student received any distinction certificates or trophies for a code/s they are involved in

KILLARA TROPHY: For outstanding leadership and contribution to sport in the school on and off the field of play

DECISION MAKING CRITERIA

  1. Student recognised within their code/s they play – captaincy etc
  2. Students  involvement in any off field activities  – coach, official, event  organiser

DEB MILLS TROPHY: Sportsperson of the Year – female. For the female student who has achieved the highest level in sport in a variety of codes

DECISION MAKING CRITERIA

  1. The students recognition and achievement in more than one sport 
  2. The students achievement in sport played for the college, and the level in which they are playing
  3. The students achievement in sport not offered at the college

MORRIS BARLING TROPHY: Sportsperson of the Year – Male. For the male student who has achieved the highest level in sport in a variety of codes

DECISION MAKING CRITERIA

  1. The students recognition and achievement in more than one sport 
  2. The students achievement in sport played for the college, and the level in which they are playing
  3. The students achievement in sport not offered at the college
  4. Has the student received any distinction certificates or trophies for a code/s they are involved in

HORNAL TROPHY: Awarded to the student reaching the highest levels in sport.

DECISION MAKING CRITERIA

  1. The students achievements in sport played for the college or not offered at college, at regional, national and international level
  2. Number of participants, competitions within the code
  3. Level of competition eg U18 vs U15
