A couple of months ago Matthew Nel (Y11) got the chance to play at the Basin Reserve as part of a select XI to play for the Governor Generals against the Wanderers Cricket Club. Here is what he had to say about the event:
Once a year a game is arranged between the Governor General’s XI and a side from the Wanderers. The Governor Generals team is a team consisting of 12 players invited from 11 college first XIs. I was selected to represent Newlands College this year and the 50-over game was played at the Basin reserve. The Wanderers team consisted of past and present Wellington players and this year even had an ex Zimbabwean international playing for them. We were lucky enough to meet the previous Governor General Sir Anand Satyanand who hosted us for lunch in the Long room (The current Governor General Patsy Reddy wasn’t able to make it). I really enjoyed the experience of playing at the Basin Reserve and playing against a very strong Wanderers side – unfortunately we lost.
