Athletics Wrap Up

Over the last couple of weeks our students have been involved in both the Western Zone Athletics and Regional Athletics events.

WESTERN ZONE ATHLETICS

Western Zone athletics saw 9 students brave the wind and rain to compete. There were a number of stand out performances which saw the following students make it through to the Regional Athletics Championship:

Rhea Whiteman (Y9) had a fantastic day on the track and in the field. In the 100m she finished 2ND in the heats before finishing 2nd again in the final.

In the field Rhea finished 20cm further than the rest in the High Jump with a height of 1.50cm and took the opportunity to jump for the record of 1.54cm which she came close to jumping.

The long jump saw her jump 4.83cm only 3cm off the Western Zone record unfortunately she came up against an athlete from Onslow who jumped the record in her first jump and finished off with a massive jump of 5.08m so Rhea finished 2nd.

Cara McCully (Y9) won the Junior Girls 70m Hurdles and followed up with an impressive victory in the Shot Put winning by 50cm. She then finished 3rd in the Discus.

Jesse Cahill (Y9) competed in the 200m finishing 4th and then competed in the 1500m finishing 3rd.

REGIONAL ATHLETICS

Rhea Whiteman again finished 1st in the heats for the 100m and then finished 3rd. In the High Jump she jumped the same height as 3 other girls but finished 4th on a countback. The long jump saw her finish 2nd again to the same athlete from Onslow College.

Tiffany Natta (Y11) fresh from her victory at the AWD Athletics finished 1st in the AWD 100m final.

Cara McCully (Y9) took out the title in the Junior Girls 70m Hurdles and finished 7th in the Shot Put.

Jesse Cahill (Y9) finished a credible 4th in the Junior Girls 1500m.

Both Cara and Rhea qualified for the North Island Championships which has subsequently been cancelled.

Congratulations to all those involved.
