On Wednesday 5 March, 22 athletes attended the Western Zone Athletics meet that was run by Newlands College for this year. The weather had been changeable during the morning but by 2pm it started to rain all kinds of cats and dogs and the meet was eventually cancelled. A number of students did exceptionally well results wise whilst others attending their first athletics meet should be proud of the effort they put in.
Thank you also to the staff and students who helped run the day in such trying conditions.
Notable performances were:
Jarred Hodson – winner of Junior Boys 300m
Verona Conroy – winner of Intermediate Girls 400m and runner up of Intermediate Girls 800m
Ben Murdoch – winner of Junior Boys 200m and winner of Junior Boys High Jump
Kushla Smith – runner up of Junior Girls 300m in a new Western Zone record time and winner of Junior Girls 800m
Aprille Mincher – winner of Senior Girls Triple Jump
Lateefah Idris – winner of Junior Girls Discus
On Monday the school will be notified as to which students will go on to attend the Wellington Regional Athletics meet on Thursday 13 March.
